During the month of September 2014, additional exploration of Archaeology afforded an opportunity for ERP students to take a trip to the Museum of the Middle Appalachians in Saltville, Virginia to explore Archaeology with Harry Haynes and Janice Orr. Mr. Haynes helped students make connections about the archaeological significance of our community to the rest of the nation. Mrs. Orr took students through an wonderful hands-on presentation that focused on artifacts and allowed them to contemplate the idea of archaeology being a study of Science and Social Studies and the importance of both perspectives to develop an accurate measurement of a past. |
Special thank you to the parents who took a day out of their schedule to go with us to Dollywood. It was a perfect day to experience the elements of roller coasters and the components therein. The pictures submitted are greatly appreciated as well!
During October 2014, Smyth County ERP students participated in an Archaeological dig at Chilhowie High School in Chilhowie, Virginia. Mr. Mike Sturgill, principal at Chilhowie High School, was kind enough to offer a section of school property that allowed the children to practice excavation processes. Mr. Halsey, a teacher at Chilhowie High School, gave his time to removed the top soil that allowed students to get to work, straight away. With equipment contributions made by Mildred Surber, students were able to make Archaeological discoveries and apply excavation practices that were explored in the classroom.
