Rick Blevins, Principal SCTC welcomed everyone to the Smyth County Career and Technology Center
Dr. Dennis Carter, Division Superintendent made opening remarks and recognized programs of highlight currently utilized in Smyth County.

Amy Wheeler, SGES Principal gave an update of different programs and events within the Enrichment Resource Program and extended an invitation to parents to compete an exit slip to identify areas of interest for their children, as well and express any comments and/or concerns.
Smyth County ERP teachers provided reflections of the first two units within the program and a look into the next units. Video of Field Experiences from the Elementary and Middle School groups. Lisa Benish from the Blue Ridge Discovery Center spoke about the programs offered and some of the programs that can be made available in schools. More information can be found at the Blue Ridge Discovery Center website. Parental discussion about Honors Graduates and recognizing students for their achievement through their school career. Spring Gifted Advisory Committee Meeting: April 26, 2018On April 26, 2018, the Gifted Advisory Committees met at Marion Middle School, Chilhowie Middle School, and Rich Valley Elementary to reflect on the 2017-2018 units of study in the Enrichment Resource Program, potential units of study for the 2018-2019, and recognized the Governor's School Invitations.

We'd like to extend our appreciation to Oak Point Elementary and Dr. Gary Folke for hosting the Marion area meeting, Chilhowie Elementary School and Mr. Michael Colston for hosting the Chilhowie area meeting, and Northwood Middle School and Mrs. Mariann Blevins for hosting the Saltville/Rich Valley area meeting.

- Mrs. Wheeler opened with introductions
- C. Farley recognized highlights from the 2015-2016 school year
- Overlook of the 2016-2017 school year and potential units. C. Farley spoke about some of the ideas for experiences.
- Recognize the Computer Science practices in the schools
Dr. Robinson commented on the availability of a computer science class in the High Schools for the upcoming school year. - In relation to coding, Mrs. Wheeler suggested a trip to Virginia Tech trip to the “cave”
- Floor was opened for committee suggestions to ideas
- Discussion of transitions into career, beginning influences in Middle School and going into high school.
- Mrs. Wheeler spoke about Governor School participants and the interest in different programs.
- In reviewing Governor’s School, Mrs. Wheeler recognized the Marion Community students and their participation.
- Mr. Davidson commented on the interest in Governor School and the availability of degree programs that are made available.
- M. Garrett identified a webpage where the additional opportunities can be found
- Mr. Hardin commented on supporting the idea of providing gifted students some career bridging opportunities. Recognizing that the units of practice are important, but the exposure to building career options early is a good idea.
- Dr. Robinson commented on boosting career exposures early on.
- Dr. Carter commented on students who are taking accelerated classes with Algebra and Geometry.
- Mr. Davison talked about the different strategies his school uses for Math placement.
- Discussion about SAT prep and students taking the PSAT
- Question about Chrome books. . . MSHS will give both freshmen and sophomores a Chromebook.
- Dr. Robinson talked briefly about the partnership with Google.
- Format mirrored review and highlights from Marion meeting.
- Mr. Eller suggested using Radford University as they have a Criminal Justice program to explore with Dr. Donna Boyd (forensics anthropology)
- In reviewing Governor’s School, Mrs. Wheeler recognized the Chilhowie Community students and their participation.
- Mrs. Wheeler talked about some of the community program availability.
- Mrs. Wheeler spoke about the future
- Ms. Berry expressed a concern for communication with parents/students/schools and getting word about programs home to parents. Discussion about how and when to get information home.
- Mr. Blevins suggested doing a bulk mailing to students to get information home a couple of times a year.

- Career oriented/Technical educations and how they can be utilized by gifted students

After introductions by Mrs. Wheeler and Dr. Robinson, Crystal Farley shared an overview of what has been covered in the program so far during this school year. Melanie Garrett shared DVD that showcased field experiences and class activities around the county. In concluding the program reflections to this point, Mrs. Wheeler asked members for any comments as well as asked for suggestions and thoughts. Mrs. Wheeler shared an overview of what is to come in the program and asked that members contact their thoughts.
Linda McCraw, counselor and teacher at the Southwest Virginia Governor’s School presented about the opportunities for Smyth County Student at the school in Pulaski. The Governor’s School in Pulaski is a math and science and technology focus. Subjects are dual enrollment and students could enter into college with up to 45 college credits, entering into college as a sophomore. She will be visiting Marion and Chilhowie Schools in January and concluded as she spoke briefly about the Summer Camp is available to rising 5th, 6th, and 7th graders.
Mrs. Wheeler introduced more summer opportunities through Colleges. The Smyth County Gifted Website has the information for these summer programs and other program opportunities.
Michael McNulty spoke at the meeting, introducing the Theatre Arts program at UVA Wise Governor’s School. The program creates connections with theatre and life skills. The goal is to learn about life through the interest of theatre. During the three week program, they earn three college credits for successful participation in the program. While participating, they go to the Blackfriar’s Playhouse in the Staunton, Virginia. Students also have field experiences at the Frontier Culture Museum and get to see setting of Shakespeare’s life. Students have the opportunity to see what it’s like living on a college campus. There’s one spot available for Region Seven schools.
Mrs. Wheeler encourages everyone to call her any time with questions.

Spring Gifted Advisory Committee Segment Community Meetings: April 27, 2015
The Gifted Advisory Board met in respective communities on April 27, 2015. We appreciate Atkins Elementary School, Chilhowie High School, and Rich Valley Elementary School for hosting these meetings and appreciate the community Gifted Advisory Representatives from each community who took time to review the year in ERP and look at ideas next year.
Focal points that lead the meetings were reflections from the Enrichment Resource Program teachers, a look at students who have applied and/or participating in Governor's School, share ideas about units of study for next year where parents shared their thoughts and resources, different ideas to strengthen communication, and an open discussion about the students who participate in the program and their unique characteristic.
We talked about the elements of our program that showcase the significance in relationships between the student and teacher in ERP and the areas that we can strengthen in our program that can help these students beyond their class time in ERP.
We greatly appreciate the administration, schools, staff, parents, and community members that joined and supported us today and look forward to applying ideas and generate components to help our program grow.

Fall Gifted Advisory Committee Meeting: November 13, 2014*Official minutes from the Gifted Advisory Board meeting should be on the Smyth County Gifted and Talented website. The following highlight notes are provided to complement.
The Gifted Advisory Board met on November 13, 2014 to discuss components of both the Gifted and Talented and the Enrichment Resource Pull-out program. We appreciate the Smyth Career and Technology Center for hosting our meeting.
Visitors from Wythville Community College (WCC) and Virginia Highlands Community College (VHCC) came to discuss the Summer Residential Governor Schools. Bill Grose - WCC spoke about serving the students of Marion Senior High School and Michael McBride - VHCC spoke about serving the students of Chilhowie High and Northwood High schools. Rising tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students have the opportunity to focus in the area of Technology, Math and Science, and Performing Arts. Students who participate in these programs earn college credits. The Advisory Board were given a summary of the Archaeology unit and a look into the areas of focus for the remainder of the school year. We greatly appreciate the time afforded by parents, teachers, administration, and school board representatives. The encouraging comments and support from the board about the program are motivating and we look forward to the Spring meeting. |
