2025-2026 Units of Study
Science: Appalachian Mountains- Diversity in our part of the world
Enrichment students will develop an understanding of the landscape of the Appalachian mountains. We will explore the geological events throughout history that have created this beautiful formation. Connections between geographical features and climate will be made. Unique plant and animal life throughout the region will be studied. Students will be creating interest based projects as a culminating activity.
Language Arts: Appalachian language, stories, and poetry
Students will listen to, read, and enjoy folk tales and oral histories of the Appalachians as we delve into the components of a good story. Oral storytelling techniques and common story themes in the Appalachians will be explored. The origin of Appalachian words and our unique mountain dialect will be discussed. Writing skills will greatly expand as students create heartwarming Appalachian themed “I AM” poems.
Math: Quilts
Enrichment classes will investigate geometric shapes and measurement as we explore the history behind quilts! Each student will apply those critical skills to create their own unique quilt. We hope to have those projects displayed throughout the schools and county for families to enjoy together.
Social Studies: Local History
ERP kids will become historians as they explore the history of Smyth county and surrounding communities! We will take a journey through time as we learn to research the rich history of the area using the web, interesting books, and other cool resources. We will take a bus tour through Smyth County to explore significant historical sites and landmarks. Our goal is for students to develop a great appreciation for the special place we call home!
