2022-2023 Units of Study

SCIENCE-  Inventions
Enrichment students will become inventors!  Students will gain insight into the creative process of inventing as they research and discover how inventions have evolved over time and transformed our lives.  We will explore the creative process as we brainstorm, tinker, and create unique inventions of our own.

MATH-
Applying Mathematical Skills to Art

Core skills in art and math are closely related!  There are endless ways in which art can be used to teach math. And it’s an excellent strategy. Each requires spatial reasoning skills and the ability to recognize patterns. For example, both artists and mathematicians use geometry in their work. There must be an understanding of shapes, symmetry, proportion, and measurement.  Through arts integration, students will learn how math can be creative, and how art can be analytical.  Students will strengthen their skills in each and develop a sense of who they really are as  learners.

LANGUAGE ARTS- Drama and Performing Arts
Students will be fully engaged in supporting each other to improve  dramatic and performance skills. We explore multiple elements of drama and performing arts in this fun filled unit.  Play writing, costume design, and theater presentation components will be applied to create exciting culminating productions.

HISTORY/ SOCIAL STUDIES-  Music History
Why teach music history?  It brings music alive and makes it more meaningful!  Using music in the classroom enhances students' understanding of history and makes past cultures come alive. Music is an artifact of culture that can tell us about the people who created it and the times they lived in. Guiding students to explore the historical purpose and background of the music they sing and play will make for more meaningful learning and performing.

2022-2023 Field Experience:  Virginia Tech

Students in the Smyth County Enrichment Resource Program visited Virginia Tech to spend some time emerged in the Geosciences department with Dr. Glesener.  They also had the opportunity to experience a meal on campus and a short impromptu walk around Lane Stadium/Worsham Field.

2022 - 2023 Field Experience:  William King Museum of Arts

Students in the Smyth County Enrichment Resource Program visited the William King Art Museum to participate in the Heritage Express Program.  We were fortunate enough to receive a tremendous gift from a partnership between the William King Museum of Arts and the Williams Berry Foundation that paid 100% of the cost of this trip.  This was such an incredible opportunity for our students.

2022 Hungry Mother Field Experience

Enrichment Resource Program students participated in a Field Experience where they learned about the ecosystem at Hungry Mother State Park
