On February 9, 2022, Smyth County Public Schools held their county spelling bee at the Lincoln Theatre in Marion, Virginia. Schools had representatives from each elementary and middle school. Representing Atkins Elementary: Brandon G., Sugar Grove Elementary: Lindsi D., Marion Elementary: Quinton T., Oak Point Elementary: Wesley T., Marion Middle: Jacob M., Chilhowie Elementary: Leland J., Chilhowie Middle: Bryleigh., Saltville Elementary: Kenzley F., Rich Valley Elementary: Ryleigh H., and Northwood Middle: Blaine W.
The champion of this year's spelling bee was Jacob M. at Marion Middle School and the Alternate was Kenzley F.. at Saltville Elementary School. The winning word this year was grobian. Pronouncer for this year's spelling bee was Rose Likins. Judges included Sue Tilson, Nanine Woodward, and Hannah Sage. |

On Tuesday, February 4, 2020, Smyth County Schools held their county spelling bee. Hosted by the historic Lincoln Theater, located in downtown Marion, Virginia, students from each elementary and middle schools competed to earn the title of spelling bee champion. Each year, the elementary and middle schools in Smyth County, Virginia have individual school spelling bees. Their top speller goes on to compete in the county spelling bee. This year’s top spellers in each school were: Atkins Elementary: Cameron Hulon, Chilhowie Elementary: Kevin Bal, Marion Elementary: Araceli Escobar, Oak Point Elementary: Suzanna Barker, Rich Valley Elementary: Olivia Wyatt, Saltville Elementary: Berkley Stewart, Sugar Grove Elementary: Tayah Perkins, Chilhowie Middle: Benjamin Atwell, Marion Middle: Shenji Leonard, Northwood Middle: Hollie Davidson. This year, the 2020 Smyth County Spelling Bee grand champion is Benjamin Atwell from Chilhowie Middle, winning with the word “Harlem.” The alternate is Hollie Davidson of Northwood Middle School. Benjamin will go on to represent Smyth County as he competes at the regional spelling bee held in Roanoke, VA. |

On Tuesday, February 6, 2018, Smyth County Public Schools held their 38th County Spelling Bee at Northwood Middle School. Each elementary and middle school had a representative competing to be the Spelling Bee Champion.
To determine the representatives for the County Spelling Bee, schools held individual spelling bees. School winners and representatives were: Atkins Elementary School: Travis Blouin, Chilhowie Elementary School: Olivia Gentry, Chilhowie Middle School: Cody Brogan, Marion Elementary School: Connor Barr, Marion Middle School: Shinji Leonard, Northwood Middle School: Caroline Hayden, Oak Point Elementary School: Parker White, Rich Valley Elementary School: Eli Williams, Saltville Elementary School: Lacey Crusenberry, and Sugar Grove Elementary School: Bryson Medley.
Going eleven rounds and winning with the word tempestuous, Caroline Hayden of Northwood Middle School became the 2018 Smyth County Spelling Bee champion. The alternate is Parker White of Oak Point Elementary School.
Smyth County greatly appreciates members of the community for sharing their time to judge, pronounce, and provide refreshments for this event. Mr. John Graham was this year’s pronouncer. Judges were Ms. Lynn M. White, Mrs. Nanine Woodward, and Mrs. Sue Tilson. NMS Principal, Mrs. Mariann Blevins and the faculty and staff at Northwood Middle School hosted and provided refreshments for the spelling bee participants and their families.

2017 Smyth County Schools: Spelling Bee
On Thursday, February 9, 2017 Smyth County Schools held their 2017 District Spelling Bee at Atkins Elementary School. Mr. Gary Roberts, principal and his staff hosted the event where students representatives from all of the elementary and middle schools competed to be named champion. Each student who participated in the event had already won at both their respective class and school spelling bee events.
On February 18, 2016, Smyth County held the 2016 District Spelling Bee at Chilhowie Elementary School. Congratulations to all of those who participated!
